Private school fees: How much does it cost to study in private schools in 2025

How much does it cost to study in private schools.

Thinking about sending your child to a private school? One of the first questions many parents ask is, how much are the private school fees? With all the talk around VAT on private school fees and rising living costs, it’s more important than ever to understand what to expect. In this blog, we’ll explain average private school fees in the UK, how fees work, what they cover and what to consider in 2025.

What are private school fees?

Private school fees are the amount parents pay each term or year for their child to attend an independent or private school. These schools do not receive funding from the government, so fees cover things like:

  • Teaching and learning resources
  • Classroom materials
  • Sports, music and drama activities
  • Clubs and after-school programmes
  • School trips and events
  • Meals (in some cases)

Each school is different, so it’s always best to check what is included in the fees and what might be charged separately.

What are the average private school fees in the UK?

In 2025, private school fees in the UK will vary widely depending on factors such as location, age group, and whether the school is day or boarding.

Here’s a general guide to what parents can expect:

  • Day schools: fees typically start from around £4,500 per term (approximately £13,500+ per year)
  • Boarding schools: fees typically start from around £10,000 per term (approximately £30,000+ per year)

Some schools in the UK tend to sit at the higher end of this scale, while fees for younger children in pre-prep or prep schools may be slightly lower. It’s also worth noting that fees at prestigious or elite schools, such as Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Brighton College, Westminster School, Sevenoaks School, Gordonstoun, Harrow School, Eton College, Wellington College, Concord College, Winchester College and others can be considerably higher than these averages.

What’s the deal with VAT on private school fees now?

From 1 January 2025, private schools in the UK must charge 20% VAT on all education and boarding services they provide for a fee.

Any fees paid from 29 July 2024 that relate to terms starting on or after 1 January 2025 are also subject to VAT.

This change ends the previous VAT exemption that private schools enjoyed. The government’s intention is to raise additional revenue to support public services and education.

It’s important to know that even though schools must charge 20%, that doesn’t always mean fees will jump by a full 20%. Many schools may absorb part of the cost or adjust how they spread it out.

If you’re concerned about how this applies to your situation — for example, whether fees already paid will be taxed, or how this affects boarding or special educational needs funding — it’s best to contact the school’s finance or admissions office. Also check the GOV.UK guidance (Tax Information & Impact Notes) so you have the full, official details.

What other costs should you expect?

In addition to the main tuition fees, parents might also need to budget for:

  • School uniforms
  • Music lessons or instrument hire
  • Extra tuition or specialist clubs
  • School trips abroad or residential
  • Registration and exam fees

Always ask the school for a full breakdown. Some schools include more in their fees than others.

Can scholarships or bursaries help?

Yes. Many independent schools offer scholarships and bursaries to help families manage the cost. Scholarships are usually based on ability or talent in areas like academics, sport, art or music. Bursaries are based on financial need and may cover part or all of the fees.

If you’re considering private education, it’s always worth asking the school what support might be available. Some schools also offer payment plans to spread the cost.

The Lyceum Fees

At The Lyceum, tuition fees for 2025‑26 are £7,892 per term. This includes VAT. In addition there is a lunch fee of £530 per term, also inclusive of VAT. For pupils taking music lessons, a course of 10 half‑hour lessons costs £285. When you submit your application there is a registration fee of £120 (not refundable) and once a place is offered there is a deposit of £5,000. All books and stationery are included in the main fees. Some extra charges may apply for residential visits or other school trips when needed.

If more than one child from the same family attends The Lyceum, a 10% reduction is made for the second and each additional child on tuition fees (this does not apply to after‑school clubs, holiday clubs, school visits or residential experiences).
