Shoreditch might be better known for start-ups and street art than for schools, yet behind our big black carriage doors is The Lyceum School, a co-educational independent prep school for children aged 4 to 11.

Since 1997, we have called East London our home and given families from across the City of London, Hackney, and Islington a chance at a truly transformational private education. Using the city as a classroom, our pupils get front-row seats to one of the world’s most culturally significant centres, with frequent trips to museums, parks and theatres – as well as our fantastic modern school building with specialist Art, Science and STEAM studios.

Where We Are Located

The Lyceum School is at 65 Worship Street, London EC2A 2DU, an independent school in Shoreditch, just beside the City of London. Our five-storey former print works has been transformed into bright classrooms, a library, a hall, a dining room with a mural of the London skyline and The Owlery, our STEAM Studio. An astroturf playground with colourful murals gives children space to play every day. It makes us a genuinely central private school: Shoreditch, the City and Hoxton are all on our doorstep.

Our partner nursery, Hopes and Dreams Montessori Nursery, is in the same building, so the youngest children can move to Reception without changing address. For sport and performances, we make the most of the neighbourhood, using Shoreditch Power League, Mile End Stadium, York Hall and St Giles Cripplegate throughout the year.

Areas We Serve

Families come to The Lyceum School from across Islington, Hackney and Camden, as well as the City of London, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Clerkenwell and Tower Hamlets. Many parents work in the City, so a school a short walk from Liverpool Street and Moorgate makes the daily routine far simpler.

For families looking for a private school near Islington, we are one stop from Angel on the Northern line to Old Street. As one of the independent schools in Hackney, we are a short Overground ride from Dalston, Haggerston and Hoxton. East London families based in Tower Hamlets, from Bethnal Green to Stratford, can reach us on the Central line to Liverpool Street.

Whether you are comparing the best private schools in central London or looking for a prep school in the City of London close to your office, our location makes the school run easy.

Local Area and Community

Our neighbourhood is one of London’s most exciting, and we use it every week. Finsbury Square and Bunhill Fields are moments away, and our choirs perform at Wesley’s Chapel on City Road and in the Broadgate Quarter by Liverpool Street.

For families looking for schools near Spitalfields or Bishopsgate, we are a short walk away. Spitalfields Market, Hoxton Square, Shoreditch Park, and Columbia Road Flower Market bring history, art, and culture to our doorstep. The Barbican and St Giles Cripplegate host our summer musical, while trips to museums and galleries across the capital bring our topic-based curriculum to life.

We also give back to the community. Pupils collect for Hackney Food Bank each term, lead half-termly litter picks and perform for residents of local care homes, part of the work that earned us an Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction in 2024.

A Shared History: The Lyceum School and the Dukes Family

Two teachers from the state sector founded The Lyceum School to create a small, creative school where children would love learning. From the beginning, the school combined a strong foundation in the National Curriculum with cross-curricular topic work.

When the school moved into its current home on Worship Street, parents and children were asked which words came to mind when they thought of The Lyceum School. The four most common answers, Kindness, Confidence, Creativity and Community, became the pillars that guide us today.

Today, The Lyceum School is part of Dukes Education, a family of independent schools, nurseries and colleges. Being part of the Dukes Education Family allows Little Dukes nurseries, like Hopes and Dreams Montessori, to benefit from a guaranteed entry policy, meaning that when children are ready for Reception, their place in a Dukes prep school is assured.
