Children enjoy surprise visit from award winning poet

The Lyceum School welcomed Joshua Seigal to teach year one and year two pupils about poetry and creativity.

Joshua, who is a poet, performer and educator, has taken his one-man shows to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe festival, as well as performing at the internationally renowned Edinburgh Book Festival. He was invited to the school to recite some of his poetry and encourage pupils to get involved in creativity workshops where they could ask the published poet about his work.

Joshua has studied at both Oxford University and University College of London and is known for his innovative and energetic workshops. He is committed to developing literacy skills through creative writing, while inspiring confidence and encouraging creative expression.

Headteacher at The Lyceum School, Vanessa Bingham, said: “Poetry is a really important tool for developing the writing skills of the children and we’re committed to getting them involved with it from a young age. To have such a well-respected and successful poet come in to speak with the children was a wonderful experience and they all really enjoyed it.

“Children were able to indulge their creative side as they produced drawings of imaginary monsters before working together to create poems to describe them. The results were truly monstrous!”

With the guidance of the talented poet, the children were able to explore the power of similes and metaphors as they got a taste for creative writing and self-expression.
