Children’s Mental Health Week

As part of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we have been looking at ways to build inner coping mechanisms and resilience in our pupils. The need to develop a positive mindset is vital right now during the third national lockdown. Although we may not be together in school, it is crucial that children are able to notice how they are feeling, and what they can do to make themselves feel better, a life long lesson!

Reception spent some time thinking about courage. They learned that courage is always hiding in our hearts and shared lots of examples of when they had found the courage to overcome something a little scary. The children enjoyed drawing and writing about times when they have shown courage and have begun using these to fill up their very own courage jars.

Year 1 discussed overcoming fears and asking for support from others. They have continued to learn the importance of kindness and understanding.

Year 3 focused on their mental health and the children have shared things about themselves, drawn their feelings and emotions, kept active doing lots of different exercises and danced their worries away with Miss Haynes. Manisha has been keeping busy with a rigorous exercise routine; Alma has been drawing a pop-up card for Nana; Livia has cut out a giant green rattlesnake for her mum; Wolfie has been exploring his globe, learning about the different continents and countries; and Jake has been busy learning how to balance and control a Segway with his brother, Toby.

Year 5 were asked what they would do if they had a golden ticket to their perfect day. All answers conveyed how selfless, empathetic and generous they are.

Year 6 created information posters with some top tips on how to support our mental health (seen below). The class also reflected on things they are glad for, even in these tough times: many outlined how grateful they were to have such loving and supportive families to share their time with, whilst also noting their admiration for their beloved pets!
